Savage Strawberries

I’m seriously hoping that you read the title in the same voice as the guy who introduces the different eras on Horrible Histories! 😆

So, this post is primarily about my digestive system which seems to be rubbish now that I’m in my 30s.

As some of you know, about five yeard ago, I was diagnosed (not officially via testing but by diagnosis of a doctor… don’t ask!) with Coeliac Disease which ended up making a lot of sense as to why my stomach was ballooning up every time I ate something, well, good!

Since cutting out gluten, I’ve noticed a huge difference with my stomach – it doesn’t bloat as much, it doesn’t feel like it’s being ripped apart inside, and (grossly!) my poo isn’t…fluffy!  Weird, I know!

So, I’ve learned to live with this new gluten free lifestyle and I know what the problem is, and  I even know its name.

What I’m not so sure about… is why, about seven years ago, I started to find eating strawberries (and raspberries and blackberries) an absolutely excruciating experience.

I’ve attempted Slimming World for years now and have been successful with losing a stone to a stone and a half… but nowadays, I find this a really tough task as, and I’m sure all you fellow slimmers know, fruits like strawberries are considered to be speed foods which means that they speed up your weight loss.  I can’t have them though!  My body has decided that these glorious little fruits that are perfect as a sweet treat are just not going to be accepted as a snack.

When I eat any fruits with tiny seeds, my stomach cramps like it’s never cramped before and this can go on for hours.  I’ve woken up in the middle of the night feeling like my insides are being churned and shredded and blended and mangled.  My God, it’s just agonising.

So, I avoid these fruits as much as possible… but I just don’t know why.  Why can I suddenly not eat strawberries?  Why was my body able to eat them before with no problems?  What has changed?  I know that it has nothing to do with being Coeliac because they’re not a wheat-based food.

I’d love for someone to shed some light on this… or even share their own experiences about foods that they once loved but can no longer enjoy.
